How to scan a QR code from an image on your computer

You don't need a phone to read a QR code you're already looking at on screen. QR Studio decodes from an image file, a drag-and-drop, a clipboard paste, a right-click on any image on a page, or a capture of the whole visible tab — all locally, with no upload.

The usual way

  1. 1Take a screenshot of the code or save the image to your computer.
  2. 2Search for an online QR decoder and open one of the results.
  3. 3Upload your image to their server and wait for it to come back with the decoded text.
  4. 4Copy the result, and hope the destination link is safe to open.

Where that falls short

  • Uploading is the problem: the image goes to a third party, and a QR code you found in an email or an unfamiliar document is exactly the kind of thing you don't want to hand over — or to have logged against your IP address.
  • Most online decoders take a file upload and nothing else. There is no right-click on an image, no clipboard paste, and no way to scan a code that's embedded somewhere on the page you're reading.

With QR Studio

  1. 1Press Alt+Shift+S to open the QR Studio scanner, or right-click the image directly and choose to scan it.
  2. 2Drop in the image, paste a screenshot from the clipboard, or pick a file — you can also capture the whole visible page and let QR Studio locate the code in it.
  3. 3Read the decoded value, which QR Studio parses into its actual type (a link, a contact, a Wi-Fi network), then copy it or open it once you've checked where it goes.

Free, offline, and the code you get is static — it can't expire or be redirected later.
